Scythe Mugen 5 SCMG-5000 CPU Cooler Review

Introduction

Today we are reviewing the Scythe Mugen 5 CPU Cooler, the eighth revision of a Scythe mainstay. We reviewed the Scythe Mugen MAX CPU Cooler and it scored highly. We respect Scythe, they have been around cooling for enthusiasts from the very beginning of the modern worlds view of PCs. These days, if it doesn’t have any RGB lighting or rocket thrusters, it’s not up to date.

That can be said of the mainstream vanity products, Scythe seem to stay with what they know, mostly. This can be said of the Scythe Mugen 5, an old school but up to date CPU Cooler, with all of Scythe’s know-how included, or at least that’s the hope.

The Scythe Mugen 5 supports most of the mainstream and enthusiast level CPU Sockets, including the Intel LGA2066. The specifications are good, with a very good fan noise level from the Kaze Flex PWM fan. RAM compatibility is basically unrestricted, but you may find some water cooled or RGB setups interfering with the rear of the heatsink. With the revision one now discontinued, most stockists will be discounting the revision one, reviewed today, so you may pick up this cooler for a very low price, so read on.

Owners of a Mugen 5 can order an AM4 conversion-kit from the Scythe Service by sending proof of purchase of the cooler and an AM4 motherboard or a Ryzen CPU. Scythe EU GmbH is offering the AM4 mounting kits under the aforementioned conditions only to customers from Europe.

It's no surprise that we like the Scythe Mugen 5 SCMG-5000 CPU Cooler, we like Scythe in general. The Mugen 5 is a very capable cooler, especially in overclocked conditions, and enthusiasts dream. It's also very quiet, and well put together. If you want to add more cooling, you can add a second fan and try for better overclocks. With that said, you can easily go the other way if you want some very quiet and good cooling.
