EVGA Nvidia GTX 1080 Founders Edition Graphics Card Review

The longstanding 3DMark Professional next and the EVGA GTX 1080 Founders Edition is on top, mostly. The Zotac GTX 980 Ti coming out on top of the Cloud Gate test, albeit from a closely grouped pack of results.  3D Mark Pro - Reference 10062016 | amCharts

Despite being a superb all-rounder card, the MSI GTX 970 GAMING Twin Frozr V is coming out last on most if not all results. Trumped by all the AMD cards on test, the difference in results needs to be noted when compared to the GTX 1080.

Just on the Firestrike results alone, there is around a 70% performance increase when using the GTX 1080 over the MSI GTX 970 GAMING Twin Frozr V, and though these are a generation and a theoretical product range apart, this is still an outstanding performance and something that should be called out. The Firestrike test is the only benchmark that shows a genuine power pecking order.

Sky Diver and Cloud Gate either do not use the muscle of the GTX 1080 or it’s able to utilise the GPU computing power of the other GPU cores efficiently.

3DMark Professional is another synthetic benchmark, but it’s safe to say, Futuremark and 3DMark Professional have been around since the dawn of 3D gaming on the PC. We are not talking about the games in the 1990’s that had basic flat 3D models, we mean T&L, or Transform and Lighting effects and other subtle on the fly processing of 3D rendering.

So we have a little more appreciation of the scores from Futuremark, they must know a thing or two about benchmarking graphics by now. We wouldn’t say buy a graphics card solely on the Futuremark results, but it is a solid marker of graphics grunt.

Nvidia may have dropped the ball a little with the release drivers, and the subsequent drivers that game to fix the issues, but there's no doubt, the Nvidia GTX 1080 Founders Edition is a stellar performance, and the VGA GTX 1080 Founders Edition exercises the GPU core perfectly.
