To touch, the surface feels very smooth, but textured at the same time, nice. It doesn’t feel printed or laminate, no sharp edges or overhangs.
The underside is a typical crisscross of rubber relief which adheres to a smooth desk very well. We had no slip at all.
We have been using this surface now for around 10 days and find it uncomplicated as you would expect. The surface itself is not the smoothest XTracGear out there, but it’s certainly smooth without being too shiny or glossy, and as always, we would have preferred some care instructions.
We had no negative experiences when using this surface, possibly other than its size, something suited to a LAN party, or a Microsoft Surface Pro 3 perhaps?
It is about the same size as a Surface Pro 3 and would make an excellent companion for a travel mouse. The XTracGear Carbonic doesn’t roll up, it’s flat and we think if you roll it too tightly, it will damage it and possibly crack the mouse contact surface.
We tested with a Razer gaming mouse, a Logitech travel mouse and a cheap Dell office mouse. They all operated perfectly and didn’t prefer either the invisible or red optical mice.
Conclusion
It is hard to criticise a mouse mat, but given the XTracGear’s range, it may seem a little out of place on the most part. In actual fact the XTracGear Carbonic lends itself perfectly to a travel or LAN party mouse mat. It will fit in the laptop bag or back pack just fine, and won’t be out of place.
Did we like it? It is hard to like anything after reviewing and using the Ripper XXL, but yes, we did like once used in the correct situation. As a mouse mat in its own right, there isn’t anything wrong either, in fact it is something to consider for gaming desks where room is at a premium.
