Lastly PCMark08 Professional, we run the Storage test only with all elements updated fully. PCMark08 Professional has recently been updated and the previous Storage benchmarks are invalid, so be sure to update and retest before comparing your own storage.
The Adobe results first and all results show an improvement over the MX200 disk on test. Maybe only a little for some and a lot for the Adobe Photoshop Heavy test, but we’ll take every speed improvement.
The game results are mixed, but not a big compromise in speed, the MX300 only misses out by 0.3s on the World Of Warcraft test, with Battlefield 3 a second faster.
Lastly, the Microsoft Office tests and with this one there is no real performance improvement we think you would really notice. These are synthetic tests which means they are good for repeat running and understanding a baseline, but you will have an application, game or activity that will use the capability of your storage uniquely, so understand synthetic results, but don’t hang on their every word.
Conclusion
There’s two parts to this conclusion. Firstly, if you own an MX200 generation of SSD, the MX300 will bring you right up to date in performance, technology and capacity, there’s no question about it. The 3D NAND implementation and some of the high end feature set will ensure the Crucial MX300 series is on par with the rest of the SSD industry. The MX300 series promises faster speeds, bigger capacities and a long life, the latter point we cannot confirm, but the first two do seem to be right on the money. The Crucial MX300 Limited Edition 750Gb SSD as a release on its own is a good drive and we are happy to see performance and capacity on par with Crucial’s mainstream competitors. If this is a sign of things to come from Micron and Crucial, even if you are not a fan, it’s promising.
The second part is should you invest in one of these drives? From a price point of view, the release prices of under $200/£200 will put it right in the middle of the pack, but with the usual price drops we hope to see this drive pushed to a price point that truly challenges its competitors, and it’s capable of doing just that. So yes would be the answer to the second question. There are faster drives out there, but there are a lot of slower drives too. Capacity is good and the technology is up to date. If you find one of these drives in your laptop, gaming system or media rig, you will be happy with the price, performance and capacity.
