Kingston HyperX Savage SSD 480Gb Storage Review

Admin Storage 1109

The SSD has an embossed feel about it, everything you see is manufactured, not printed, so it is a very tactile experience.

Ok, this is the part when we normally have a look inside, sometimes with damaging consequences. This time, we are going to by pass this, we are giving it away and we don’t want to void any warranty for the new owner.

So, it’s on with the testing.

Test Set Up

Tests

  • IOMeter
  • PCMark08
  • CrystalMark

First up, CrystalMarkx64. We set the bench to run three times with nine passes each, we then took the highest result.

In single non RAID configuration the performance is impressive, even if slightly under the manufacturers performance claims, stunning non the less.

Next, IO Meter IOPS. For all of the IOMeter tests we ran the following set up,

  • Full Random
  • 20Gb test file
  • 30 minute per test
  • 10 second warm up

The 20Gb test file is important, as it pushes the benchmark outside of the installed RAM, 16Gb in this test.

From 4Kb too 32Kb, the performance is astonishingly high for smaller file sizes. We would expect much lower scores in a single disc configuration for the 4Kb and 16Kb tests. 32Kb results are almost at the maximum performance for Read, making this drive a nimble drive for games and applications or anything that uses multiple small files that require to be loaded up.

Package - 9.6
Performance - 9.6
Price - 8.9
Consumer Experience - 9.6

9.4

We were not really expecting this level of performance or quality from the Kingston HyperX Savage. Not that we expected a lacklustre performance or maybe even mildly exciting, we just never expected to be so wow'd. There is an ouch on the way, it is currently £186.29 on the Amazon Store and £202.86 for the full upgrade kit.
