Lexar Professional Workflow DD512 Storage Review

Admin Storage 1106

Read/Write results continue to increase in performance as the file size increases. Reaching 329 MB/s for 256Kb file size test, this is strong performance, good to see.

Next, PCMark08 Storage test, with an overall score of 4517 this is also pretty decent when you consider it wasn’t really designed for running applications and games!

We also copied out World Of Warcraft folder on to the DD512 and ran it without issue. Sure, we could have done that with an older external HDD, but we had no concerns, performance issues or moving parts, the DD512 took it in it’s stride.

Conclusion

We haven’t really mentioned the Lexar range of docks and other related drives. The Professional Workflow range consists of a lot of modular items, such as the DD512 that all doc into small towers that can stand on your desk or in a server room. Being modular and USB, they are portable and undocking is as you would for any USB device, just unplug. At first we just thought it was all a bit unusual as networks, the internet and USB drivers are really fast these days, we changed our mind after testing it.

What makes the DD512 work is its speed, nothing will transfer large files in an office as fast as this. When you think about it, it makes perfect sense, we just hadn’t thought about using devices like this any more, but SSDs really make portable fast devices work, and the DD512 does it really well. For around the same price you will get a 2Tb external HDD but you won’t get the speed. You will get heat, some moving parts and more than one cable, it already feels like a step backwards.

Recommended

The Lexar DD512 is currently at £151.24 on the Amazon store, which is around £40 less than a Samsung external SSD 500Gb and that to us is a little too much to ignore, the DD512 is not priced out of the market either, it’s not even right on the money, it’s cheaper. The Lexar Professional Workflow DD512 surprised us, it’s not expensive, its fast, not complicated and small, we think you could even go LAN Partying with it, so what’s not to like? It is recommended for more than the professional.
